with Grant Knutson Have a great (portable) fringe show? Want to tour it around to fringes and festivals like the Dallas Solo Fest in the U. S. and Canada? Join us for an intro to the logistics side of touring; the different ways fests pick & pay their artists, how to choose which fests will work best for you, how to schedule, budget & market on the road. The class will be a discussion, with the chance to check out marketing materials from different festivals and touring shows. Additionally, we'll schedule a personal follow-up with artists who want to discuss their individual shows doen the line. Through his company, Minion Productions, Grant Knutson helps independent artists develop their shows, fund raise and tour. Theatre Artist as Freakin' Entrepreneur
with Brad McEntire A career as a theatre artist is not the same as it once was. The contemporary artist, particularly the solo performer, has oodles of opportunity to apply fresh professional thinking to a traditional field. This new breed of theatre artist is lean and flexible in his or her approach to carving out a career and creating meaningful work, as well as way more entrepreneurial in spirit. The contemporary theatre artist is not merely an interpretive, passive artist but an active instigator in the industry and art form. In this brief fun workshop Brad McEntire (Artistic Director of Audacity Theatre Lab and producer of the Dallas Solo Fest as well as playwright and performer in his own rite) offers a short and sweet overview of the side of performing that is NOT performing : marketing, networking, organizing, email lists, web presence, promo videos, playing to one's strengths, etc. The focus will be on what will help you get both attention as an actor and help you begin to carve out your own freakin' purposeful career as an instigating theatre artist. Dates/Times: Saturday, June 4 @ 2:00 - 3:00 pm Workshop duration: 1 hour Cost of workshop: $15 |
Interdisciplinary Interpretation: Staging Your Story
with Eileen Tull This workshop explores different ways to communicate a personal story on stage. We will work with spoken word, traditional storytelling, solo character work, performance art, and movement to create different versions of the same narrative. Eileen Tull is a storyteller, performance artist, poet, comedian, and creator of one-woman-shows. Her work investigates feminism, body image, addiction (to technology, to substances, and to ourselves), and, above all, seeking joy. Dates/Times: Saturday, June 4 @ 3:00 - 5:00 pm Time duration: 2 hours Cost per person: $20 |
The Art of Yoga for the Performer
with Diana Shortes Experience a physical yoga practice - linking the body, mind and breath - followed by a guided meditation designed to restore, rejuvenate and inspire. All levels. Particularly useful for performers looking to calm the overwhelm. (NOTE: come in or bring clothes to move in) Dates/Times: Saturday, June 11 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Time duration: 2 hrs Cost per person: $20 |
Blending the Personal and the Political
with David Mogolov We often want to use performance and comedy as a vehicle for political and cultural comment, but frequently our first attempts are clumsy and pedantic. In his writing, David Mogolov unites personal history with larger cultural and political trends and ideas, blending comedy and commentary into theatrical essay. In this workshop, we'll take a recursive approach to personal stories, digging into them again and again to find all the points of connection to larger themes and movements, producing comedy that says something larger while entertaining an audience. Dates/Times: Saturday, June 11 @ 1:00 - 2:30 pm Workshop duration: 1.5 hours Cost of workshop: $20 |
Portraits: Autobiography on Stage
with Vinny Mraz This workshop uses visual arts (painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, etc) as a launching pad for creative writing. Using external stimulus as a means to engage with your own subconscious we will explore our personal narratives through the lens of the poetic, the expressionistic and the surreal. Dates/Times: Saturday, June 11 @ 2:30 - 4:30 pm Time duration: 2 hours Cost per person: $20 |
